Hours: 40 hours per week (from 10:00AM--6:30PM)
Dates: Year-Round; Programming is closed on all school holidays and school breaks.
Occasional nights and Saturdays required.
Age Group: Middle School (10-13)

The Bayview Beacon, a program of the Bayview Hunter’s Point YMCA, has a hub center located at the best high school in San Francisco, Phillip & Sala Burton Academic High School and a satellite center located at the best middle school in San Francisco, MLK Jr. Academic Middle School! Together, we are implementing the community school’s model to ensure that every student graduates college ready. The Bayview Beacon gives youth the tools to thrive, while also strengthening the legs that support them: parents, family and community. All Beacon programs and services are open to everyone — especially students, parents and residents of Bayview Hunters Point, the Portola District and Visitacion Valley.

Under the direction of MLK’s Site Director, the Academic Support Specialist is responsible for assisting in the supervision, operation, development and implementation of the Bayview Beacon’s Academic Support Programs and strengthening the Beacon’s connection with students, school day staff, and surrounding community. Being highly collaborative, the Academic Support Specialist builds and maintains strong and productive relationships with and among students, school staff, parents, the YMCA, and community members of the Bayview. They should be adept at working in a fast paced environment with students of color and thinking fast on their feet.

The Academic Support Specialist will be in charge of overseeing Beacon’s Academic Support Strategies at MLK Middle School. The Academic Support Specialist will also provide provide targeted academic supports to students and generally support all aspects of the Bayview Beacon’s Extending Learning Program at MLK.

Although the academic success of our youth is our primary goal, we recognize that we must first meet the social-emotional needs of our participants. In this role, the Academic Support Coordinator must approach hisher work assessing the individual needs of participants and meeting the individual / group of students where they are at.

Assists in the development and implementation of an annual action plan identifying program activities and deadlines for deliverables; meeting the goals and deadlines identified in the action plan.
Detailed management and supervision on MLK’s Power Hour (PH), including:
Creating and distributing flyers to recruit youth;
Talking with parents and youth;
Collecting all paperwork required for registration;
Collection of daily homework from School Day; and
Tracking attendance and working with Program Leaders to ensure all students attend PH.
Implements revised program design and fresh strategies as needed in order to better meet needs of middle school-aged youth.
Assists in the coordination of semi-regular presentations and celebrations of students’ work.
Researches possible field trips and guest instructors for enhancement of program.
Communicates with parents of participants on as-needed basis.
Meets regularly with Site Coordinators and attends pertinent school day meetings as requested.
Develops strong partnerships with school day staff, including school administration, counselors, Academic Liaisons, and other community-based organizations that provide additional opportunities to participants.
Works with the rest of the Beacon staff in event-planning and in supporting all Beacon events.
When appropriate, acts as liaison between the Beacon and community partners.
With input from Academic Liaisons, administers quantitative youth and parent surveys.
Collects and manages attendance records for Power Hour.
Is on site during program hours to provide supervision of program and ensure the safety of program participants.
Participates in ongoing professional development throughout the year.
Assumes other duties as assigned.

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Bachelor Degree required.
3 years or more working with children in an organized setting.
Experience working with urban youth.
Knowledge of the Bayview Community.
Strong After School Program development and evaluation experience preferred.
Must be a talented multi-tasker and an independent worker who is adept at working on a team, thrives in a start-up environment, and maintains a flexible and positive attitude.
Must have the ability to develop positive relationships with children, adults, parents, staff, teachers, administration, the Y, and community members.
Must be able to work independently, have consistent follow through and demonstrate good judgment.
Excellent organizational skills and multi-project/multi-task oriented, including experience scheduling and coordinating multiple fun and education-focused activities for youth.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Team player with proven ability to work with people from a variety of different ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, sexual and generational backgrounds.
Computer literate including Microsoft Word and Excel and experience with databases.
Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog preferred.
Background/Fingerprint/TB Clearance.
Provide documentation that meets SFUSD Instructional Aid requirement or take equivalency exam.

Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the Association Office human resources department prior to beginning the first day of work.

This is an hourly, non-exempt position with benefits.


Pay: 18.00 - $20.00 DOE per hour plus full benefits and YMCA membership
