POSITION SUMMARY

Earthjustice seeks a Director of Donor Marketing and Engagement who will create and implement successful stewardship and donor marketing campaigns to engage, cultivate and steward major gift, planned gift, and public support donors of Earthjustice. In this new role, the Director will serve as a key strategic partner to the Vice President of Development, Associate Vice President of Development, and other Development Directors to develop and execute strategies that engage donors about Earthjustice. These strategies will reflect a wide range of ideas and tactics. The Director of Donor Marketing and Engagement oversees projects that help translate key fundraising priorities of Earthjustice into compelling publications, events, SWAG, and other marketing vehicles.

Working from Earthjustice headquarters in San Francisco and reporting to the Associate VP of Development, the Director serves as a key member of the Development Department Leadership Team and will collaborate closely with Earthjustice's Senior Leadership Team and program staff to deepen engagement with donors across the board. S/he will focus primarily on marketing Earthjustice to different groups of donors and lead a high-functioning, six-member team, including two Development Writers, one Stewardship Officer, two Events Managers, and a Marketing Associate.

The Director of Donor Marketing and Engagement will assist Development Department leadership with strategic planning and departmental administration and work closely with the VP and Associate VP of Development, VP of Communications, Program staff, and Communications staff, to develop and implement strategies for meeting annual team and organizational goals.

OPPORTUNITY

This is a compelling opportunity to lead a new cross-functional division within Earthjustice's Development Department that will effectively elevate and integrate the organization's donor marketing, engagement, and stewardship programs. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Direction: 20%

* Sets goals for and directs a centralized donor marketing and stewardship program to support outreach to Earthjustice donors, including major gifts, planned gifts, and public support donors and prospects.

* Generates ideas and gathers them from the field about innovative and exciting strategies for donor marketing, and ensures that ideas are appropriately vetted and well-executed.

* Serves as the primary liaison with Communications team to ensure that messages about Earthjustice and our signature initiatives and efforts are well-integrated and adapted in all donor engagement activities and materials.

* Stays up to date on Earthjustice's litigation efforts and current priorities of other departments like Communications and Policy, Advocacy, and Legislation to ensure that donor marketing activities reflect the most relevant and appropriate messages, stories, and content.

* Leads the development of appropriate policies and procedures for requesting donor collateral, events, donor staffing, etc., in collaboration with Development Directors.

* Attends departmental and organizational retreats for shared planning, team building, and professional development.

* Collaborates with interdepartmental teams on goal development and work products.

Management (Essential Functions): 30%

* Supervises Writers, Stewardship Officer, Events team and Associate to ensure high-quality outreach materials and engagement with a broad spectrum of donors, provide training, and ensure that open lines of communication exist between Development and Communications staff.

* Develops and tracks annual work plan for the Donor Marketing and Engagement team.

* Sets clear team direction that aligns with Earthjustice strategy, mission, and vision.

* Develops staff by providing career development opportunities with appropriate training, encouragement, and supervision.

* Provides staff with performance feedback and acts as a coach and mentor.

* Promotes inclusive work environment for team and models inclusive behavior.

* Leads hiring for vacancies within the Donor Marketing and Engagement team, and serves on hiring committees for open positions within the organization; recruits and hires qualified candidates who fit position requirements and the work environment.

Marketing and Engagement: 50%

* Oversees development and production of development campaign publications, brochures, newsletters, and mailings targeted for major donors, as well as event invitations, webpages, presentations, promotional videos, and other communications vehicles aimed at a broad range of donors, including the Annual Report.

* Serves as the principal editor as well as the principal translator of Earthjustice's brand and graphic standards for the Development Department.

* Closely collaborates with the VP of Development and Director of Major Gifts in overall strategic stewardship plans for major donors.

* Works with Major Gifts, Direct Marketing, and Planned Gifts team members, relevant Programs staff, and other key stakeholders on delivering donor cultivation and stewardship plans, materials, and events.

DESIRED BACKGROUND AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The successful candidate will have a minimum of five to seven years of successful marketing and stewardship experience in a fundraising department, with progressively greater responsibilities. S/he will have a minimum of three to five years of management experience, supervising, mentoring and empowering the work of others in a high performing institution or organization with a reputation for quality and excellence.

Other essential qualifications and attributes include:

* Ability to collaborate closely with Earthjustice's Senior Leadership Team and program staff to deepen engagement with donors across the board.

* Understanding of and experience with brand/donor marketing and how to adapt an organizational brand to different donor audiences and needs.

* Deep understanding of and enthusiasm for marketing strategies and tactics, accompanied by a knowledge of donor audiences across a wide and diverse spectrum.

* Ability to collaborate across functions and departments.

* Ability to build and manage a strong team and work constructively as a team member.

* Ability to develop and lead a team to execute effectively on marketing strategies and goals, in alignment with the organizational brand identity.

* Ability to interpret and understand programmatic goals and translate to intended audiences (e.g. funders).

* Ability to prioritize and to manage work independently; ability to perform effectively and with minimal supervision under pressure of multiple deadlines.

* Ability to take initiative in identifying and skillfully solving problems.

* Excellent creative writing and editing skills, including the ability to develop successful marketing collateral and other materials.

* Ability to synthesize complex material, to translate it into readable and engaging marketing collateral, and to communicate it clearly and succinctly.

* Outstanding verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

* Ability to construct and manage a budget.

* Strong project management skills.

* Knowledge of environmental marketing and stewardship preferred.

* Interest in environmental protection and public health concerns.

* Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.

* Contributes to recruiting, hiring, developing and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.

* Ability to manage and lead a diverse team in a diverse environment with emotional intelligence and cultural competency.

* Has self-awareness and understands the impact of behaviors and emotional intelligence in the workplace. Also understands team's strengths and areas for development.

* Commitment to and experience in developing team skills and talents to meet the evolving needs of an organization.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
