Leadership Opportunity

Director of Early Childhood Education

Congregation Emanu-El

San Francisco, CA

December 2017

The Congregation Emanu-El Preschool is one of San Francisco’s leading preschools, housed within one of the largest and most vibrant synagogues in the United States.

Since its founding in 1986, the preschool has offered a warm, caring, and stimulating environment for preschool-aged children and their families.

In addition to fostering the children’s social, intellectual, and emotional development, the Emanu-El preschool also builds a meaningful community among its families, many of whom develop bonds to the synagogue that endure long after their children leave the preschool.

The School

Our Mission

Our mission is to nurture the next generation of Jewish and global citizens as they become caretakers of our planet, our community and each other.

Our Vision

Our vision is to become a model Jewish preschool that exemplifies contemporary best practices in the field of Early Childhood Education.

We strive to be a school where teachers, children, parents and families experience transformative learning, and where other educators come to learn.

Our Philosophy

We use an inquiry-based approach to learning where teachers and children co-construct curriculum that is grounded in the Jewish values of:

Tikkun Olam (Social and Environmental Justice)

Kavod (Respect)

Chesed (Kindness)

Kehillah (Community)

Wonder (Radical Amazement)

The Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Early Childhood Education will have overall responsibility for designing and managing all aspects of the synagogue’s early childhood programming.

As a member of the synagogue’s senior staff, the Director will participate in senior staff meetings to help shape policies and programs for the entire synagogue.

Success in this role comes through collaboration with the Director, skilled staff, and a diverse population of families.

The Director will be responsible for delivering an exceptional preschool experience for the school’s children and their families.

The preschool is currently in good health, with a strong curriculum and teachers dedicated to that teaching philosophy.

Thus, it will be important for the Director to continue to build on this current success, by promoting the existing teaching philosophy and curriculum retaining excellent teachers and administrative personnel; and fostering a positive, high-energy culture that motivates teachers, children, and families.

The Director will have the opportunity to think strategically and creatively about the preschool’s future direction.

Recognizing the preschool’s tremendous potential for growth, the synagogue’s Board of Directors is interested in the Director’s long-term vision for the school’s development.
