JOB SUMMARY:

Under general administrative direction, the incumbent provides overall management, operational support and leadership and develops state-of-the art, effective and efficient programs and best practices that ensure a safe environment and improve the safety and health of employees and patients at all facilities. Responsible for all Environmental Health and Safety programs in compliance with applicable local, state, federal mandates and Joint Commission requirements. Areas of focus in coordination with other directors include but are not limited to:

* Hazard Surveillance, Workplace Safety Inspections & EHS Audits

* Industrial Hygiene

* General Safety Management

* Hazardous Materials Management

* Hazardous Waste Management

* Solid Waste Management and Recycling/Reuse

* Medical and Pharmaceutical Waste Management

* Radiation Safety

* Radioactive Waste Management

* Laboratory Safety/Chemical Hygiene

* Utility and Medical Equipment Safety

* Illness and Injury Prevention

* Security Management

* Fire Prevention/Life Safety

* Emergency Management

* Environmental Permits, Taxes/Fees & Reports

* Environmental Compliance

* Environmental Health & Safety Education

Actively works in support of regulatory compliance assuring that the affiliate maintains full accreditation and compliance with state and federal regulations. Understands specific responsibilities for regulatory compliance in the home department and insures daily requirements for compliance are met.

The incumbent acts as a resource to all standing committees related to the Environment of Care and other hospital-wide committees to ensure coordination of environmental health and safety issues, effective follow through, and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.

The incumbent has the authority to intervene whenever conditions pose an immediate threat to life or health or threaten damage to equipment or buildings.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Provides day-to-day guidance to all facility personnel on environmental compliance and safety issues. Maintains visibility within the organization and establishes effective working relationships with employees at all levels.

* Develops and directs implementation of policies, programs, and activities to improve the safety of employees and patients. Compiles data to evaluate trends and measure the impact of corrective action.

* Assures that all employees receive safety education during initial orientation and training on both facility-wide and department specific issues as part of the continuing education process. Develops training programs that meet the needs of both clinical and non-clinical staff.

* Works collaboratively with staff from Infection Control, Return-to-Work, Occupational and Employee Health, Worker's Compensation and Risk Management in an effort to reduce risk and promote a safer work environment. Directs workplace/safety inspections and audits. Directs accident investigation to include data collection, analysis and facilitation of efforts to resolve and follow up on identified problems.

Education:

* Associates's Degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational health sciences or a related field with 5-10 years experience.

* Bachelor's Degree in industrial hygiene is preferred.

Experience:

* Minimum of 5-10 years experience promulgating industrial hygiene, occupational safety and or environmental compliance programs.

* Minimum of 3-5 years if candidate has a Bachelor's degree.

* Credible experience planning and implementing proactive EH&S programs and policies.

* Evidence of progressively increasing levels of responsibility.

Licensures and Certifications:

* Healthcare Environment Manager - HEM

* Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)

* Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

* Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)

Skills and Knowledge:

* Knowledge of hospital operations and industry principles & practices governing environmental health & safety.

* Extensive knowledge of applicable legislation governing occupational safety, hazardous materials & wastes including JC Standards.

* Exceptional ability to interact with all levels of employees, as well as representatives from external agencies and/ accrediting organizations.

* Excellent organizational, communication and training skills.
